PERSONAL NOTE

Here we are in May, which brings a quiet mix of meaningful reminders all at once. Mother’s Day nudges us to appreciate those who’ve cared for us (and maybe put up with us at times), Mental Health Awareness Month gently reminds us to take better care of ourselves (something your Stress Reduction Coach happens to care a lot about), and Memorial Day invites us to pause in gratitude for the sacrifices that make our everyday lives possible. With all of that in mind, I think you’ll enjoy this month’s topic.

Be the Reason Someone Smiles Today

There’s something powerful about being on the receiving end of a simple act of kindness. A warm smile. A thoughtful text. Someone remembering your name… or your coffee order. It doesn’t take much—but somehow, it can change the tone of an entire day. Most of us can think of a moment like that…A time when someone showed up in a small way, and it stayed with us longer than we expected.

What we don’t always realize is how often we are that person for someone else—without even knowing it. You might be the calm voice someone needed in the middle of their chaos. You might be the person who made a stressful situation feel manageable. You might be the one interaction that didn’t feel rushed, impatient, or transactional.

And in today’s world… that matters more than ever. Because let’s be honest—people are carrying a lot right now. Tight deadlines. Heavy expectations. Personal challenges that don’t get left at the door when the workday begins. And most of it… is invisible.

So, let’s consider something else. When you’re overwhelmed, under pressure, and juggling too much—it’s easy to go into “get it done” mode. You’re focused. Efficient. Moving quickly. You’re checking boxes, solving problems, keeping things moving forward. And in that space, kindness can unintentionally take a back seat. Not because you don’t care… But because you’re stretched. Because your energy is being pulled in too many directions at once.

That’s why this isn’t about doing something big or adding one more thing to your plate. It’s about small, intentional moments woven into what you’re already doing.  Holding eye contact instead of rushing past. Pausing long enough to really listen instead of thinking about your next task. Softening your tone—even when you’re busy. Letting someone go ahead of you. Sending a quick “thinking of you” message. Even choosing patience in a moment where it would be easier to react.

These are tiny choices… with outsized impact. And here’s something worth noticing: Those moments don’t just stay with the other person… they shift something in you, too. They slow you down. They soften your stress response. They bring you out of pressure and back into connection. Even briefly.

And sometimes, that brief moment is exactly what you needed as well. It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about getting it right every time. It’s about being present enough to notice the opportunity.

Because the truth is… you never really know what someone else is carrying. The person in front of you might be having a hard day. A hard week. Or quietly walking through something they haven’t shared with anyone. And your interaction—however small—becomes part of that experience.

So today, without overthinking it… Look for one moment. One interaction. One opportunity to soften your tone, offer a smile, or truly connect. Not because it’s expected… But because it matters. Be the reason someone smiles.

And if today feels busy or overwhelming, remember this…
you don’t have to change the world to make a difference—
you just have to show up, in one small moment, and choose to be the reason someone smiles.
