Somewhere along the way, fun tends to slip into the “optional” category. It becomes something you’ll get to after the work is done, the responsibilities are handled, and everything else is checked off the list. The problem is, that list is rarely finished.
Fun isn’t frivolous. It’s restorative. Laughter, enjoyment, and lightness help reset your nervous system, improve perspective, and make daily stress more manageable. When life feels heavy, fun is often the first thing people need — and the last thing they give themselves permission to have.
Quote
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.” --— Anne Lamott
Making fun a priority doesn’t mean ignoring responsibilities or forcing yourself to be cheerful. It means intentionally creating moments that give you a mental and emotional break. That could be spending time with people who make you laugh, doing something creative, enjoying music, being outside, or simply allowing yourself to play without an agenda. Fun looks different for everyone. What matters is that it feels genuine and refreshing to you, not like another task on your to-do list.
Coaching Question: What is one simple way you could add a little more fun or lightness into your days right now?
Fun doesn’t have to be planned weeks in advance or take hours of your time. Often, it’s found in small, spontaneous moments when you give yourself permission to enjoy what’s right in front of you. When fun becomes part of your routine instead of a reward, life feels more balanced — and a lot more enjoyable.
Action to Take: Choose one enjoyable activity to do this week — something purely for fun. Put it on your calendar and treat it as non-negotiable. Notice how even a small dose of fun affects your mood, energy, and outlook.
Always supporting you, Jan
