Someone asks for a favor, and your answer is already forming: “I should say yes.” You haven’t checked your calendar. You haven’t considered how tired you are. You just know you don’t want to disappoint them. It’s thoughtful to care about other people. It’s also fair to consider what saying yes will require of you.
Quote
“Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” — Brené Brown
A reluctant yes can turn into a stressful obligation, especially when you hope the other person would somehow notice how stretched you were. A clear answer gives both of you something honest to work with.
Today's Coaching Challenge
When you feel you “should” say yes, what are you afraid might happen if you say no?
You may worry that saying no will disappoint someone or make you seem selfish. Naming that fear helps you see whether it reflects what would actually happen or what you imagine might happen. It also gives you room to consider your own time and energy before you answer.
Action to take
Practice one sentence that gives you time to decide before you say yes.
