Having command over your life is an illusion as there is very little you can manage.  That doesn't mean that you are subject to the whims of the world, so let's look at several things that you can do to affect what happens to you.  Another way to react to things out of your control is to maintain proper perspective.

 Quote

"The difference between a mountain and a molehill is your perspective." --Al Neuharth

One of the definitions of perspective is "the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance".  Much like the quotation, it's your response to a situation that creates most of your action or inaction.  If you deem something to be very important, like a family emergency, you will move heaven and earth to take care of the situation.

Today's Coaching Challenge

As you encounter different situations during your day do you find yourself making a big deal out of something minor or is your attitude more like "It is what it is", then you just move on to the next thing?

If the traffic lights aren't working properly or the restaurant you planned to go to is closed and you realize that those events are minor in the scheme of things, then you have the proper perspective.  Why spend any of your life energy on all the little things you come across during your day?  Save it for the big stuff.

Action to take

Before you react to something decide whether it really matters.  You could even rate it on a scale of 1 to 10.  If it's a 9 or 10 give it the appropriate attention but if it's a 3 or 4 don't dwell on it and realize that it's probably just something you can't control.
