One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is learning to separate facts from assumptions. Imagine receiving a text that simply says, "Please call me when you have a minute.” Within seconds, your mind may begin filling in the blanks. “Something must be wrong. “Did I forget something?" "Am I in trouble?" Yet the only fact is that someone asked you to call. Everything else is an assumption.
Quote
"The greatest obstacle to discovering the truth is assuming you already know it." — Adapted from Daniel J. Boorstin
Our brains naturally try to complete the picture whenever information is missing. Unfortunately, they often fill those empty spaces with worst-case scenarios instead of neutral possibilities. When we respond to facts instead of assumptions, we make better decisions, have healthier conversations, and experience far less unnecessary stress.
Today's Coaching Challenge
How often do you react to what you assume is true instead of what you know?
Awareness isn't about criticizing yourself. It's about giving yourself permission to slow down before your imagination takes over. What do I actually know? When am I just guessing?
Action to take
The next time you feel your stress level rising, grab a piece of paper. Draw two columns labeled Facts and Assumptions. Fill them in before you react. You may discover the facts tell a much different story than your assumptions.
Always supporting you, Jan
