Turkey with Jan

This Thanksgiving, I thought I’d switch things up again! Last year, we reflected on the many blessings that often go unnoticed. This year, I’m adding a little fun — a peek into the history of Thanksgiving and one of my favorite recipes that’s perfect when you want something different than the usual yams and marshmallows.

The first Thanksgiving dates back to 1621, when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people came together for a three-day harvest feast. It looked nothing like what we see today — no stuffing, pumpkin pie, or cranberry sauce — but it was centered on the same thing we still hold dear: gratitude and community. Fast forward to 1863, when President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday, encouraging Americans to pause and give thanks even during one of the most divided times in history. That message still feels relevant today — gratitude grounds us, connects us, and reminds us that even in challenging times, there’s good to be found.

And because no Thanksgiving is complete without something delicious, here’s one of my all-time favorites:

Apple, Leek, and Sweet Potato Gratin

A savory and sophisticated alternative to the candied, marshmallow-covered sweet potatoes some of us have outgrown.

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 2 large leeks, washed and thinly sliced
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh thyme (or 2 tsp dried)
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • A grating of fresh nutmeg
  • 2 large sweet potatoes (about 1 lb), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 large apple, cored and thinly sliced

Directions:

Combine the cream, leeks, thyme, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in a saucepan and bring to a boil over moderate heat, stirring occasionally. Add the sweet potatoes and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Layer half the sweet potato mixture in a buttered baking dish, top with sliced apple, then repeat with the remaining sweet potato mixture and cheese. Bake uncovered at 325°F for about 45 minutes, until bubbling and golden brown. Serves 6 to 8.

Wherever and however you’re celebrating, may your day be filled with laughter, connection, and good food. I’m thankful for each of you — for your kindness, encouragement, and the joy you bring into this community. Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!

Always supporting you,                                                                                                                                                                                                  Jan
